We are incredibly excited to share the news of the successful launch of a new Youth Council in Bulgaria! From October 30th to November 1st, 2023, we held a dynamic three-day “Official Start Session” that brought together a passionate group of young people ready to make a difference in their communities. This wasn’t just a meeting; it was a transformative experience of empowerment, collaboration, and strategic planning, laying the groundwork for a thriving and impactful youth-led initiative.
The three-day session was thoughtfully designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge needed to become effective advocates for change. A key focus was on fostering leadership, developing strong communication skills, and building a collaborative spirit that would underpin their future work.
Day 1: Building the Foundation of the Youth Council:
The first day was dedicated to establishing the framework for the Youth Council. After an opening session that set a positive tone, the program began with engaging icebreaker activities designed to build relationships and establish a strong sense of community among participants. A presentation outlined the council’s objectives and emphasized the importance of youth participation in shaping their communities. The core of the day centered around a collaborative workshop: “Creating Council Structure and Regulations.” Young people actively worked together to draft the council’s operational framework, rules, and regulations, a crucial step in ensuring the council’s future success. A reflection activity focusing on the council’s mission and vision followed, ensuring participants were aligned in their shared goals. The day concluded with a brief overview of the second day’s agenda, ensuring everyone was prepared for what lay ahead.
Day 2: Honing Essential Skills for Collective Action:
Day two focused on building the skills crucial for effective collective action within their community. The morning session focused on “Effective Communication and Teamwork,” teaching participants techniques to collaborate effectively and communicate their ideas persuasively and confidently. This theoretical input was immediately followed by a highly engaging interactive role-playing exercise: “Decision-Making Scenarios.” This exercise provided a safe and supportive environment for practicing decision-making skills and exploring group dynamics, laying the groundwork for the council’s future work. The afternoon was dedicated to a team-building activity: “Collaborative Challenges,” designed to enhance collaboration and trust among the participants through engaging and playful teamwork exercises. This fun and insightful session provided critical opportunities to strengthen their bond and build the necessary rapport for collective action within the council. The day concluded with a group reflection session that focused on how learnings from the team activities could be applied effectively to the future work of the Youth Council, solidifying the link between teamwork, collaboration, and successful community engagement.
Day 3: Shaping the Future: Developing and Presenting Initiatives:
The final day brought together everything learned during the previous two days. The morning session was dedicated to learning how to translate ideas into tangible action plans. The workshop “Turning Ideas into Action” focused on helping participants develop a plan for community initiatives. This insightful session provided tools and strategies for participants to formulate achievable plans, allocate resources, and address potential challenges effectively. The afternoon session was dedicated to developing specific proposals for initiatives the group wished to implement. This included not only finalizing the action plans but also brainstorming potential collaborations with other organizations and community members, ensuring that their initiatives were well-supported and as impactful as possible. The session concluded with each group presenting their proposed initiatives to the group as a whole, gathering feedback and further refining their plans. This was followed by a closing ceremony, which enthusiastically acknowledged the achievements and commitment of all the participants and celebrated the successful launch of the Youth Council. This was an inspiring celebration that signified the beginning of a new journey of meaningful engagement and positive impact in their communities.
